Water Media Artist

Susan Cornelis is a water media artist in north Sebastopol, California. Her "Studio in the Orchard" is a bright yellow building surrounded by fruit trees and garden with a view of the beautiful Russian River vineyards and coastal mountains. Behind the studio lives a small flock of chickens who sometimes serve as models for sketches and paintings and provide a backdrop of musical clucking. The studio also serves as the year round gallery for her paintings and for twice a year open studios, as well as being the setting for regularly scheduled classes and workshops. (continued >)

Henri Matisse

Quotes by Henri Matisse:

"I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me."

"The essential thing is to spring forth, to express the bolt of lightning one senses upon contact with a thing. The function of the artist is not to translate an observation but to express the shock of the object on his nature; the shock, with the original reaction."

"An artist must never be a prisoner. Prisoner? An artist should never be a prisoner of himself, prisoner of style, prisoner of reputation, prisoner of success, etc."

"Purer colors... have in themselves, independently of the objects they serve to express, a significant action on the feelings of those who look at them."

"Drawing is like making an expressive gesture with the advantage of permanence."

"In art, truth and reality begin when you no longer understand anything you do or know and there remains in you an energy, that much stronger for being balanced by opposition, compressed, condensed. Then you must present it with the greatest humility."

"When I started to paint I felt transported into a kind of paradise... In everyday life I was usually bored and vexed... Starting to paint I felt gloriously free... "

From Wikipedia: "Henri Matisse (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ʁi matis]; 31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art."
